Golden Daffodils (2017)

Golden Daffodils (2017) for voice, piano, alto saxophone and double bass is a setting of  the poem I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud by William Wordsworth in 1807. Much of his work focuses on the plight of the common man; showing sympathy for their hardships, painting beautiful images of nature in words, and championing "common speech" in his lyrical poems. By focusing on the simple things in life, he is rebelled against the extravagant high-class culture during the Industrial Revolution. I chose to mix popular song harmonies with more experimental techniques to represent Wordsworth's radical yet down-to-Earth poetic style and dramatic use of imagery. Throughout this song you will hear chord clusters, polyrhythmic motives, and drastic style shifts that bring to life the narrative of an individual's battle between personal isolation and surrender to the blissful memory of nature. Sections of improvisation and rubato give the saxophone player opportunity to have their own creative voice within the piece, just as Wordsworth drew inspiration from his sister's written experience of daffodils while writing the poem.
